What is it about the country that encourages the consumption of flavored snack crackers? Well-heeled denizens away from the bustle of the city, particularly families and couples, are evidently doing a lot of entertaining at home, as can be seen by such cross-merchandising candidates as wine and dairy snacks, spreads and dips — natural companions with crackers at social gatherings. This focus on entertaining may be in response to recent (and, for many, lingering) economic woes, a natural reaction to the relatively fewer activities in the country, a tendency for couples to hold parties at home rather than go out as singles often do, or a combination of all of these factors. Another key factor could be the item’s versatility as a snack component, whether at a party or for a school lunch or evening nibble. In any case, consumers in affluent suburban spreads are also subject to such influences when it comes to reaching for the flavored snack crackers, especially older bustling families.
As part of the grocer’s ambitious growth plans for the coming year, Iowa-based Hy-Vee’s new 93,000-square-foot Ankeny store is located in the Prairie Trail planned community, a 1,100-acre development that includes residential, commercial and retail properties as well as parks and other recreational facilities.
