Loblaw's Bagless Initiative Comes to British Columbia

BRAMPTON, Ont. -- In line with Loblaw Cos., Ltd.'s April 2007 commitment to reduce 1 billion plastic bags from Canada's landfills within a year, Langford Real Canadian Superstore, slated to relaunch Nov. 15, will be the first major grocery and general merchandise retail store in the province of British Columbia to dispense with plastic grocery bags at checkouts.

"As Canada's largest grocery retailer, we have a responsibility to help reduce waste in our communities," said Loblaw executive chairman Galen G. Weston. "Opening this store with bagless checkouts is another step in the right direction."

In early 2008 Loblaw will launch Maxi & Co in Sherbrooke, Que. as the first big-box retail store to go bagless at the checkouts in that province. Sherbrooke will be the third plastic-bagless Loblaw-owned store. Milton, Ont. is the site of the first plastic-bagless Superstore.

PC Green Reusable grocery bags and boxes will be available at all of the locations. Shoppers may also bring in any reusable bag, even from another retailer, to hold their groceries.

Coinciding with opening of Langford Real Canadian Superstore, each household in Langford will be mailed a complimentary PC Green Bag and a coupon for a free PC Green Box with a minimum $25 purchase. Until Dec. 8, shoppers will be offered a buy-one-get-one-free for the PC Green Bag and $1 off the PC Green Box.

Canadians currently use about 10 billion plastic bags annually, according to Loblaw.

Loblaw is Canada's largest food distributor and a leading provider of general merchandise, drug store, and financial products and services. The company is one of the largest private-sector employers in Canada, employing over 139,000 full-time and part-time workers.
