Local Pro Athletes Team Up with Safeway Against Prostate Cancer

Safeway Inc., The Prostate Cancer Foundation, and UCSF Medical Center this afternoon will host four major league baseball players who will compete against each other in a "grill off" and sports trivia contest to raise money for promoting promote prostate cancer awareness

The Safeway Homerun Grill-Off for Father's Day, to be held at the retailer's 16th Street store. just hours before the Oakland A's take on the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, is part of Safeway's annual Prostate Cancer Awareness campaign.

Dr. Dean Ornish and Hall of Fame Manager Tommy Lasorda will attend the event and help judge the competition, which pits Oakland A's Mike Sweeney and Mark Ellis against San Francisco Giants Aaron Rowand and Dave Roberts.

Safeway e.v.p. Larree Renda and noted UCSF cancer researcher Dr. Kirsten Greene will be on hand to explain the company's dedication to prostate cancer and other cancer causes. Mayor Gavin Newsom and Assemblywoman Fiona Ma will also attend the event.
