Meijer Signs Deal for First Detroit Location

Meijer, Inc. signed an agreement Friday to open a 192,000-square-foot store anchoring the new $90-million Shoppes at Gateway Park retail development, marking the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based superstore operator’s first Detroit location, according to a published report.

With 365,000 square feet of retail space, the Shoppes at Gateway Park will rank among the Motor City’s largest retail developments and is expected to open in 2011.

“It’s another sign of confidence in the retail potential in Detroit,” Olga Stella, VP for business development at the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., told the Detroit Free Press. “I think that, like any city in the country, Detroit needs a variety of grocery retail options. One of the options we don’t have is big-box options, and Meijer can help fill that niche.”
