Meijer's Free Scripts Passes Million Milestone in Under Year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Supercenter retailer Meijer Inc. here said it has dispensed more than a million free prescriptions to its customers during the first year of its free antibiotic program.

"When we launched this innovative program last year, our goal was to help families here in the Midwest as they continue to deal with rising health care costs," said Meijer co-chairman Hank Meijer. "The Meijer free antibiotic program has been hugely successful."

Meijer customers throughout its five-state region were quick to take advantage of the program. The retailer filled nearly 200,000 free prescriptions in the metro Detroit area alone, and more than 150,000 prescriptions in Grand Rapids. Meijer stores in Ohio and northern Kentucky accounted for 200,000 free prescriptions, and Indiana stores filled more than 150,000.

Meijer said its drug program covers leading oral generic antibiotics with a special focus on the prescriptions most often filled for children. It includes at least one antibiotic from each of the major antibiotic classifications and more than 70 percent of the generic, pediatric antibiotic prescriptions filled by Meijer, including Amoxicillin, Cephalexin, SMZ-TMP, Ciprofloxacin, Penicillin VK, Ampicillin and Erythromycin.

"Reaching this milestone in less than 12 months validates that this program is something that truly benefits our customers," added Meijer. " I would be surprised if we didn't hit the two million milestone by late spring 2008."

Meijer operates 181 supercenters throughout Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky.
