Nash Finch Acquires U Save Foods' 14 Supermarkets

Nash Finch Company on Monday announced its completed acquisition of U Save Foods Inc. through a purchase of U Save's capital stock. Headquartered in Omaha, Neb., U Save Foods was a privately-held company with 14 supermarkets operating in Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado.

"The acquisition of these supermarkets underscores our continued execution of our strategic plan of strong retail growth in the Upper Midwest," said Ron Marshall, Nash Finch president and CEO. "We are excited that these fine stores and outstanding associates now join Nash Finch's expanding retail chain and performance driven team."

Including the acquired stores, Nash Finch currently owns and operates 111 stores in the Upper Midwest, principally supermarkets under the Econofoods, Sun Mart and Family Thrift Center trade names. The former U Save stores currently operate under the U Save Foods, Sixth Street Food Stores, Cub Foods and Pic' n Save banners. These acquired stores will be re-branded under Nash Finch's Sun Mart banner later this year. Sun Mart supermarkets emphasize a convenient shopping experience with outstanding perishable freshness and exceptional customer service. In addition, Sun Mart offers consumers more than 15 exclusive signature items such as Bernini Pizza and Cinnfully Good Cinnamon Rolls, as well as high quality private label products under the Our Family label.

Two of the acquired stores are located in Omaha, while the others are located in the cities of North Platte, McCook, Scottsbluff, Ogallala, Grand Island, Kearney, Lexington and Norfolk. Two other stores are located in Colorado and Kansas. These new stores join 19 other corporately owned and operated Nash Finch supermarkets in Nebraska serviced by distribution centers in Omaha, Neb. and Rapid City, S.D. This acquisition creates the largest supermarket chain in the state of Nebraska with 31 stores employing more than 2500 associates. Responsibility for all corporate retail stores falls under Michael Petersen, executive vice president and president of retail, a Nebraska native who joined Nash Finch earlier this year after an extensive career with Baker's Supermarkets in Omaha.
