NCR Extends Self-Checkout to Entire Store

DAYTON, Ohio -- NCR here said that retailers using NCR FastLane self-checkout units at the checkstand can now extend self-checkout functionality to other areas of the store with a new solution the vendor launched last week in the U.S.

Called the FastLane Order and Pay, the system is designed to provide self-service opportunities throughout the store - such as a deli or bakery section or an in-store food-service operation, NCR said. Each unit occupies a compact footprint and features the FastLane interface, but without the scan and bag functionality.

"With this solution, retailers can leverage their NCR FastLane investment by migrating additional transactions to self-service," said Mike Webster, NCR v.p. for self-service solutions. "[FastLane] customers are familiar with NCR self-checkout."

To use the system, consumers enter their choices, and then pay with cash, debit card, or credit card as they do with the traditional Fastlane units. The system prints a receipt that the user brings to a store associate before picking up the purchase. Shoppers can also use their store loyalty card to earn points or take advantage of special offers.

In addition, retailers can offer shoppers the option to pay at the front of the store, using either self-checkout or assisted-service checkout, NCR said.

NCR said it will introduce the system at its booth (No. 1327) at the National Retail Federation's Annual Convention & Expo, Jan. 13-16, in New York.
