New West Hartford, Conn. Waldbaum's Expands Kosher Offering

MONTVALE, N.J. -- The Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. here opened a newly remodeled Fresh Waldbaum's store in West Hartford, Conn. Friday with a larger kosher offering.

The location at 772 North Main Street now features a kosher bakery, and a glatt kosher deli and meat department supervised daily by a mashgiach (rabbinical authority) employed full-time by the store.

"We've updated our West Hartford Waldbaum's to reflect our company's new fresh concept store, and increased our fresh and kosher product offerings to meet the demands of our area customers," noted A&P president and c.e.o. Eric Claus in a statement.

"The ethnic specialties that we inject into the formats emerging from our capital plan will be determined and executed similarly to what we've done in West Hartford, on as as-needed basis dictated by the local demographics," A&P spokesman Rick De Santa explained to Progressive Grocer.

"West Hartford is obviously a Fresh store, but if you look at other stores, including the discount Food Basics stores in Paterson and North Bergen, N.J., you can see similar treatments, largely Hispanic in those two instances,” De Santa said. “So it's not a matter of 'planning' ethnic stores of any particular flavor or in any particular number -- but more effectively addressing those audiences where we are developing or remodeling stores."

Beyond the kosher offerings, the revamped store will sell an extensive selection of fresh foods, among them grab-and-go deli items; a wide variety of fresh organic and natural fruits and vegetables; and a broad assortment of 100 percent UDSA Choice beef, poultry and seafood. Additionally, Red Tag Savings are advertised in the weekly circular, with reduced prices on over 5,000 items, available every day in every aisle.
