JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. is the latest retailer to make the switch to trans-fat-free fried chicken. The regional retailer is using a new oil -- Mazola ZT, a blend of corn and sunflower oils -- to eliminate the trans fat in fried chicken and several other deli items.

Winn-Dixie said that using the new cooking oil results in fried foods that taste the same as those cooked in its previous oil. The oil is now being used to prepare fried chicken, chicken tenders, drumettes, fried turkey breast, chicken wings, catfish and catfish nuggets, and chicken breast used for chick fillet sandwiches.

"We know our customers want healthier options, without sacrificing taste," said Judy Holland, director of consumer affairs at Winn-Dixie, in a statement. "We conducted extensive research to ensure we could deliver an excellent and very similar product to our customers while removing the unhealthy trans fats. We think this will provide the best of both worlds for our shoppers."
