ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here is now offering a reusable flat-bottomed plastic shopping bag that can hold up to 25 pounds, for just 99 cents, with the grocer's Shoppers Club card, according to an online column by s.v.p. of consumer affairs Mary Ellen Burris.
The machine-washable black bag, which sports the Wegmans logo in white, is made from a water-repellent, nonwoven polypropylene blend and folds up for easy storage, noted Burris.
In response to those who decry the use of plastic, Burris observed, "[T]he reusability takes the curse off the charge by some that plastic things use up a nonrenewable resource. It is recyclable, too."
Wegmans will not pay customers to reuse the new bags, which are available at most checkout stations and in front of the registers on special racks, she added.
Last year the grocer brought out a reusable canvas bag.
