    Consumers Expected to Spend More on Easter Shopping This Year: NRF

    WASHINGTON -- Easter spending is expected to increase this year, with the average shopper planning to invest the most on food for the Easter meal ($37.56) and a new spring outfit ($26.03), according to the National Retail Federation's 2007 Easter Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey.

    WASHINGTON -- Easter spending is expected to increase this year, with the average shopper planning to invest the most on food for the Easter meal ($37.56) and a new spring outfit ($26.03), according to the National Retail Federation's 2007 Easter Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey.

    Shoppers who are planning to celebrate Easter (79.5 percent) are expected to spend an average of $135.07, up 11 percent from last year's $121.72 per person. Total holiday spending is estimated to reach $14.37 billion.

    In addition to food and clothing, popular Easter purchases include candy ($18.53), gifts ($20.61), flowers ($9.63), and decorations ($7.63).

    The survey was conducted for NRF by BIGresearch, reaching 8,801 consumers from March 7 through March, 14, 2007. The consumer poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.0 percent, NRF said.
