GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores, Inc. here said it has made a series of executive shifts aimed at streamlining decision-making and quickening its response rate to consumer needs.
The company named Dennis Eidson, former e.v.p./marketing and merchandising, to the newly created e.v.p./c.o.o. position. Eidson will lead the marketing, merchandising, and retail operations for Spartan Stores' network of 87 retail stores and independent customers, via a new structure that integrates oversight responsibility for enterprise-wide marketing, merchandising, and retail operations under a single position.
Reporting to Eidson will be Ted Adornato, e.v.p./retail operations and Alan Hartline, formerly v.p./center store merchandising, the latter of whom Spartan also named to the newly created position of s.v.p./corporate merchandising.
Hartline will lead merchandising strategies for the company's retail and distribution divisions. Brian Haaraoja, newly named v.p./center store merchandising, will report to Hartline.
"The newly created positions and reporting structure will allow us to better accommodate our continued growth," said Craig C. Sturken, Spartan's chairman, president and c.e.o. He said the changes will further help the company "streamline the critical strategic decision making process and provide a more fully-integrated management structure and oversight that incorporates all key elements of our business." The goal, he said, is to allow Spartan to be "a more nimble distribution and retail organization, which enhances our ability to respond quickly and effectively to changes in consumer behavior."
With warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Michigan, Spartan Stores owns and operates 68 retail supermarkets and 19 deep-discount food and drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, including Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, D&W Fresh Markets, and The Pharm.
