    FDA Broadens Peanut Butter Salmonella Warning

    WASHINGTON -- The FDA on Friday warned consumers to destroy any Peter Pan peanut butter bought since May 2006, in the widening of an earlier alert about salmonella-contaminated peanut butter tentatively tied to a ConAgra plant in Georgia that manufactures Peter Pan-branded peanut butter and also Great Value-branded peanut butter that is distributed to Wal-Mart

    WASHINGTON -- The FDA on Friday warned consumers to destroy any Peter Pan peanut butter bought since May 2006, in the widening of an earlier alert about salmonella-contaminated peanut butter tentatively tied to a ConAgra plant in Georgia that manufactures Peter Pan-branded peanut butter and also Great Value-branded peanut butter that is distributed to Wal-Mart.

    The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had reported late last week that more than 290 people from 39 states had become ill in the food poisoning outbreak, and 46 have been hospitalized, but with no fatalities.

    ConAgra Foods Inc., which makes Peter Pan, said it was cooperating in investigations to find the source of the contamination.

    On February 14, FDA had advised consumers that "the affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number '2111.' It's announcement on February 16, however, broadened the recommendation, urging consumers "not to eat any Peter Pan peanut butter purchased since May 2006 and not to eat Great Value peanut butter with a product code beginning with "2111" purchased since May 2006."
