GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Bi-Lo Holdings, LLC, the parent company of Bi-Lo, LLC and Bruno's Supermarkets Inc., has named former Ahold USA Retail c.f.o. Brian Hotarek president and c.e.o. of Bi-Lo. Hotarek, who has served as a director on Bi-Lo's board of directors since July 2006, succeeds Dean Cohagan, who is retiring after five years at Bi-Lo's helm.
Hotarek has over 28 years of experience in the supermarket industry, as well as 10 years in commercial banking. Aside from his tenure as c.f.o. of Ahold USA Retail, he served in several positions at the Netherlands-based retail conglomerate from 2000 until 2006, among them chief business controlling officer and head of strategic initiatives of Ahold NV. From 1985 to 2000, Hotarek held various positions at Ahold banner Stop & Shop, including e.v.p. and c.f.o.
"We operate in a dynamic industry, and Bi-Lo has made significant strides over the past two years repositioning the company in our marketplace," noted Hotarek. "Bi-Lo is a strong company with a proven track record of innovation and with talented people dedicated to the customers and communities in which we operate."
Hotarek added that he would work with Cohagan "to effect a seamless transition."
"We believe Brian's appointment is a big win for the company, and we're confident that he is the right person with the right vision to strengthen BI-LO's leadership position in the Southeast," said Len Allen, a board director for Bi-Lo Holdings, and President of Lone Star U.S., which owns the company. "Brian has a successful track record in this industry and his familiarity with the company and the people at Bi-Lo will be integral to the company's future success."
In January 2005 Ahold completed the sale of the Bi-Lo and Bruno's chains to Lone Star for $660 million in cash.
Employing approximately 23,500 people, Bi-Lo operates 305 full-service supermarkets in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee.
