CAMP HILL, Pa. -- Rite Aid Corp. here has joined with Lindora, Inc., a medically supervised weight control program, to help customers fulfill their New Year's resolutions to shed pounds with the Rite Weigh Challenge.

Rite Aid said that with Lindora's help, it has developed a 10-week program that provides customers the tools and motivation needed to lose 10 percent of their body weight and make major improvements in their health.

Earlier this year, Rite Aid teamed with Lindora to open, in Orange County, Calif., the first in-store health care clinics that also offer medically supervised treatment for weight management. Lindora opened its first health care clinic in a Rite Aid store in Costa Mesa, Calif. In October, and two more are slated to open in Newport Beach and Laguna Nigel, Calif. next month.

"Being overweight can contribute to over 50 other health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis," noted Rite Aid s.v.p. of pharmacy Mark de Bruin. "Rite Aid is encouraging people to lose excess weight and get healthy for the New Year by offering a free, safe, easy-to-follow, medically based weight-loss program. We leveraged Lindora's expertise to create a 10-week program that will help people reach their weight-loss goals and, as always, Rite Aid pharmacists are specially trained to assist people along the way."

The Rite Weigh Challenge provides a free travel-size planner, available exclusively at Rite Aid stores, with a step-by-step outline of the program, complete with daily and weekly goals for calorie intake, healthy food choices, and an exercise plan. Information on food serving sizes, sample meal plans, and a weekly chart to record weight, water, calorie, carb, protein and fat intake, and daily exercise are all included in the planner, in addition to motivational tips and quotes.

The program also offers a Healthy Weight guide, with tips and advice from Rite Aid such as how to measure body mass index, successful weight-loss strategies, a comprehensive guide to the Food Pyramid, and an exercise program from Meredith Corp.'s Fitness Magazine. All program participants will also have free access to a special Web site on www.riteaid.com with additional tools, among them more sample menu plans, an online weight tracker, daily e-mails and encouraging advice, and a body mass index calculator. Visitors can also register for the Rite Weigh Challenge online and download relevant food and exercise-tracking information.

The Rite Weigh Challenge is part of a larger healthy weight management initiative in all Rite Aid locations during January, and part of the company's commitment to educating patients on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and offering programs and services to help people get and stay healthy. Previous initiatives have included diabetes awareness, vitamin education, summer skin care, allergy awareness, and heart health.

Established in 1971, the Lindora program helps 4,000 patients every day at its 35 Southern California medical clinics, and thousands more via online programs and best-selling books, according to Lindora.

Rite Aid operates about 3,320 stores in 27 states and the District of Columbia.
