Roche Bros. Co-founder Pledges $1 Million for Boys & Girls Club

WELLSLEY, Mass. -- Pat Roche, co-founder of the Roche Bros. supermarket chain here, last week donated $1 million toward building a new clubhouse for the Boys & Girls Club in Marshfield, Mass., where he's lived for the past 42 years, according to a published report.

"It's such a necessary thing. It really is," Roche told the Quincy, Mass. Patriot Ledger.

The club's current space, which it moved into in 2004 and has a 300-member capacity, is too small, so the organization has leased 9.3 acres of town-owned land on which to build a new 34,000-square-foot clubhouse. The $9 million project will include a full-size gym, a learning station and computer lab, a large outdoor play area, and a teen center. Construction will be funded entirely by private donations such as Roche's.

As well as his money, Roche has also donated time to the Boys & Girls Club, heading the fundraising drive and serving on the organization's board.

He said he hopes that others will pledge to donate so the clubhouse can be built more quickly.
