MONTVALE, N.J. -- A&P has rolled out four designer-quality reusable shopping bags in all of its stores, allowing consumers to help the environment and contribute to global conservation efforts at the same time. Created and marketed by the company, the bags cost 99 cents each and will advance the work of the Elizabeth Haub Foundation, to which a portion of sale proceeds will be donated.

Elizabeth Haub (1899-1977), the mother of A&P executive chairman Christian Haub, was a philanthropist actively involved in the development and support of environmental law and policy in Europe. In her honor and to further her work, her daughter-in-law, Helga Haub of the Tengelmann Group, A&P's majority shareholder, established the Elizabeth Haub Foundation in North America.

Over the years, foundation has played a key role in such landmark international environmental efforts as the World Charter for Nature of The United Nations, the Endangered Species Convention, the Algiers and Kuala Lumpur Conventions on the Protection of Nature and Natural Resources, and the Wetlands and Migratory Species Conventions.

"Our entire family takes great pride in Elizabeth Haub's commitment and achievements, as a true pioneer of international environmental protection and preservation," noted Christian Haub in a statement. "I hope our customers will appreciate and enjoy these beautiful and useful items, and in so doing support both our environment and the foundation's important work."

Shoppers can also send direct contributions to the foundation's address in Washington, D.C.

A&P operates 405 stores in nine states and the District of Columbia under the A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh, Farmer Jack, Sav-A-Center and Food Basics banners.
