    Bottom Dollar Food Celebrates Keeping Costs Low by Saving Energy

    SALISBURY, N.C. - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials, vendor partners, and civic and energy leaders recently joined Bottom Dollar Food in Frederick, Md., to celebrate the chain's commitment to conserving energy.

    SALISBURY, N.C. - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials, vendor partners, and civic and energy leaders recently joined Bottom Dollar Food in Frederick, Md., to celebrate the chain's commitment to conserving energy.

    "Bringing the same corporate commitment that has resulted in significant energy savings in Food Lion stores to Bottom Dollar Food is good business and will have tremendous benefit to the company, employees, customers, and the community," said Jean Lupinacci, U.S. EPA chief of the EnergyStar Commercial and Industrial Branch. "But saving energy means much more. Because generating energy results in the release of greenhouse gases, eliminating unnecessary energy use helps the environment now and in generations to come."

    Bottom Dollar Food, a new discount grocery concept created by Food Lion LLC, a division of the Delhaize Group, has continued the energy conservation strategies set by Food Lion. Since 2000, Food Lion has reduced energy consumption in its stores by more than 2.45 trillion BTUs (the energy equivalent of powering 71,784 American homes). Food Lion's aggressive energy reduction efforts have saved nearly $104.8 million dollars over six years.

    Seven Bottom Dollar Food stores hold EnergyStar designation from the U.S. EPA, certification that they are among the most energy efficient grocery stores in the industry. The U.S. EPA reports that approximately 1,100 grocery stores today have EnergyStar designation.
