LEVALLOIS-PERRET CEDEX, France -- Carrefour Group, the world's second largest retailer with annual revenues of over 110 billion dollars, began the deployment of a master data management (MDM) solution to consolidate information sources shared by its operations in four countries into a single database to provide a single version of the truth for its local and corporate operations in those regions.
The retailer installed ibs Referential from San Bruno, Calif.-based Soft Solutions, a flexible retail-specific data model developed to address the MDM challenges of large retailers. The solution was required to support Carrefour's multi-country, multi-banner, multi-format, and multi-organization business environment.
According to Soft Solutions, ibs Referential provides the flexibility and scalability to structure and consolidate all corporate information in compliance with international standards, and provides the ability for data management of any business activity.
Carrefour Spain, the retailer's second largest market, led the rollout. "Carrefour Spain has been recognized by the Group as the best practices leader in terms of merchandise data management," said Eduardo Morillas, Carrefour Spain c.i.o. "Carrefour Spain was the natural first candidate to implement the retail MDM Suite as a core foundation for our IT System."
The retailer expects the deployment to be completed by the first quarter of 2007, when the legacy systems will be replaced by the new system.
In addition to delivering data quality and consistency, Carrefour expects this project to have significant positive impact on its plans for continued business transformations.
Other multi-divisional, multi-format Tier 1 retailers using technology from Soft Solutions include Auchan, Group Louis Delhaize, Kingfisher, Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, and Galeries Lafayette.
Carrefour operates hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores, and discount stores in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, and employs 430,000 associates.
