CARLISLE, Pa. -- Last week's visit of Royal Ahold c.e.o. Anders Moberg to Giant-Carlisle stores in Pennsylvania has prompted the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) to caution the company not to forget its associates at Tops Markets, which is to be sold.
UFCW represents almost 11,000 Tops workers in New York and Pennsylvania.
"Moberg should understand that if his company attempts to sell Ahold's Tops stores without regard for workers or communities post-sale, he risks tarnishing the company's reputation at every Ahold banner operating in the U.S.," the union noted in a statement. "UFCW local unions and members working under Ahold banners up and down the East Coast are standing ready to take action in solidarity to support UFCW members employed by Tops."
The union added that it would "continue to aggressively represent our members and enforce all union contract provisions while the company seeks a buyer. And we will actively support the best-situated and most enlightened bidders for the betterment of the company, its future shareholders/owners, and especially for the 84,000 Ahold employees represented by the UFCW."
