SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Big Y here said it plans to open a $5 million World Class Market in North Branford, Conn. early in 2008.

The North Branford location will be Big Y's 59th store and the fifth in New Haven County, joining existing World Class Markets in North Haven, Guilford, Naugatuck, and Ansonia.

The proposed store is part of a project by West Haven, Conn.-based Julian Enterprises, which has filed a site plan application on a 10-acre site. The multimillion-dollar development will also feature a retail co-anchor of approximately 10,800 square feet, in addition to a 3,500-square-foot freestanding branch bank.

Among the World Class Market format's highlights are an International Food Court with an eat-in cafe; a broad assortment of foods to go, including fully cooked rotisserie chickens, cooked-to-order fish and chips, and heat-and-eat entrees; a wide variety of specialty foods such as an extensive selection of organic and kosher foods; a full-service Butcher Shop, where shoppers can have selections cut to order; and more over checkouts with a state-of-the-art computerized cash register system enabling a customer to view his or her order as it's being rung up, on a personal customer touchscreen.

Additional Big Y locations planned for Connecticut include Bethel, where construction is underway for a World Class Big Y slated to open in the spring 2007; Stratford, which is scheduled to open in early 2008; Torrington, where a new World Class Market will replace the existing Big Y on the same site early in 2008; and Old Saybrook, where development approvals are in progress.

Big Y operates 56 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,200 employees.
