Landover, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC here is hosting Pink Ribbon Produce, a fundraiser and education event that unites the retailer, its shoppers and nine produce suppliers to help raise money to combat breast cancer. The program started Oct. 13 and will run through Nov. 19.
The suppliers will contribute generously when shoppers buy Dole Fresh-Cut Salads, Nature Sweet Tomatoes, potatoes from Ampco Distribution Systems, watermelons from McMelon, PlumSweets from Sunsweet, croutons and refrigerated dressings from T. Marzetti, Ocean Spray Craisins, La Mexicana Salsa, and Washington Apples from Rainier Fruit, Stemilt Growers, and Washington Fruit.

All of the funds raised will be donated to local affiliates of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Maryland. Up to 75 percent of the funds donated to a local affiliate of the foundation are used to fund local breast health education, breast cancer screening, and treatment programs.
Each of Giant's 190 produce departments is participating Pink Ribbon Produce, with a shelf tag at each participating supplier's display, a five-foot-tall graphic column to tell shoppers about the program, and a brochure urging shoppers to eat more fruit and vegetables to stay healthy, and featuring information about early detection and screening methods for breast cancer. Giant is spotlighting Pink Ribbon Produce in its weekly circulars for the duration of the fundraiser.
According to the American Cancer Society, Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer, and one out of eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
Employing more than 25,000 associates, Giant operates 190 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Included within the 190 stores are 165 full-service pharmacies.
