    12 Chicago Area Cub Foods to Close for Remodeling

    FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. -- Central Grocers Inc. here said 12 Cub Food stores it purchased in September will temporarily close Dec. 4 for remodeling.

    The grocery wholesale cooperative, which serves about 240 member-owned grocery stores, said remerchandising of the stores is set to begin the week before December, with openings slated for early January.

    Highland, Ind.-based Strack & Van Til supermarkets will operate eight of the stores purchased by Central as either discounted Ultra Foods or Strack & Van Tils.

    The remaining four will be operated by Garden Fresh Markets, a Chicago-based independent grocery-store operator that has five stores in the northern part of the city and northern suburbs in Arlington Heights, Mundelein, Round Lake Beach and Waukegan.
