SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co. here is rolling out a companywide e-learning system that should allow the Northeastern retailer to deliver a consistent professional development program to associates in geographically dispersed locations.

Hannaford said it has just finished a successful test of the program, which was developed by Nashua, N.H.-based SkillSoft PLC, a provider of e-learning and performance support solutions. Before the SkillSoft program, Hannaford employees had to travel to training facilities to attend seminars. Hannaford collaborated with SkillSoft to create an online learning program for leadership development that includes:
    --Building Relationships to Get Results
    --Mindsets, Emotions, and Coaching
    --The Basics of Listening
    --Effective Listening Skills Simulation
--Effective Feedback for Employees and Colleagues Simulation
    --Managing Conflict in the Organization
    (Story continues below.)

"We're pleased with the learning vehicles that SkillSoft has provided," said Hannaford v.p. of organizational development and learning Michelle Thorpe Hayes in a statement. "We now have a way to further develop our team members and engage them in growth opportunities."

Hannaford said 175 store and department managers from a variety of backgrounds took part in the pilot. This first group of learners favorably rated the program's content, usability, and applicability to their job responsibilities.

Based on the success of the first phase of the program, Hannaford said it is rolling out the next phase to 160 associate relations managers. This phase will feature leadership development and communication skills.

"Hannaford is known for its strong leadership and positive work environment," noted SkillSoft c.e.o. Jerry Nine. "By partnering with SkillSoft, Hannaford can offer its employees richer and more flexible and rewarding educational opportunities."

Hannaford operates 158 supermarkets and combination food-and-drug stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont.
