CAMP HILL, Pa. -- Rite Aid Corp. here is moving to snatch up more of the diabetes-friendly food segment, by carrying breakfast cereals and snack foods tailored for consumers with diabetes and weight woes in more than 3,200 locations across the country.
The products, from Hood River, Ore.-based Eat Well Be Well Foods, Inc., contain no sugar or sugar alcohol, and were developed for diabetics, pre-diabetics, and those with weight-management issues.
Additionally, this November Rite Aid will roll out a program to raise awareness of all diabetic-friendly products in its stores. All items that have met Rite Aid's approval criteria, among them all Eat Well Be Well products, will bear a special tag identifying them as diabetic-friendly choices.
The retailer also has a Web site dedicated to the management of diabetes, including information on caring for family members, and questions to ask when diagnosed with the condition. Rite Aid was recently named a Corporate Health Ambassador by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for its work in combating diabetes nationally.
For its part, Eat Well Be Well Foods works closely with members of the American Association of Diabetic Educators (AADE) and supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Eat Well Be Well Foods' nine products, which include oatmeal, cereal bars, and chocolate bars, are also available in the diet and sugar-free sections of such grocers as Albertsons, Kroger, Meijer, HEB, and Shaw's.
