MONTVALE, N.J. – The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. here upgraded three discount-format Food Basics stores in Belleville, North Bergen, and Passaic, N.J. over the weekend. According to the company, the stores now focus on "find dramatic savings, top-quality products, and a beautiful shopping environment."

The chain said the stores now have the following Food Basics format features:

--Everyday low prices throughout, as well as more dramatic weekly ad features offering rock-bottom discounts on popular items.

    --Brighter, more attractive interior decor.

--More than 7,000 popular grocery and other packaged items, including national brands and the A&P's America's Choice brand.

--"Fresh zones" linking produce, meat (USDA Choice Beef only), and bakery departments, with new displays and lighting.

--Storewide guarantee of customer satisfaction or a refund.

--Special emphasis on produce, featuring the most popular selections at low prices.

--A high-impact "power aisle" offering seasonal and "surprise" items at value prices.

--More ethnic and specialty food products targeted to neighborhood customer bases.

"These improvements demonstrate our commitment to offer the best prices in town, a complete product selection, and a great shopping atmosphere," said A&P s.v.p. of store operations Paul Wiseman. "That's the Food Basics promise. Not only can customers save 25 percent or more compared to other food stores, but they get an assortment that meets all their needs and the wholesome fresh foods they're proud to serve -- all in an easy-to-shop neighborhood market."

Added Wiseman: "We're as clear as can be about our pricing, with our signage and with special surprises like tripling the difference guaranteed on basic 10 items. If the items are less at our nearest competitor, we will honor triple the price difference. But we don't look or feel like a warehouse, and we don't force customers to buy size or quantities they don't need in order to save a lot of money."

Food Basics stores are open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A&P operates 407 stores in 10 states under the A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, SuperFresh, Farmer Jack, Sav-A-Center, and Food Basics banners.
