JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. said it plans to close seven Florida stores in late August, affecting nearly 600 positions. The news comes as Winn-Dixie prepares to seek bankruptcy court approval of its reorganization plan later this week.

The retailer disclosed the decision in a filing with Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation, according to press reports. Locations to be closed are in Deltona, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Pensacola, West Palm Beach, Pembroke Pines, and Largo.

A Winn-Dixie spokeswoman told The Associated Press that the store closings are not part of Winn-Dixie's plan to emerge from bankruptcy, but are the result of the company's ongoing evaluation of individual store performance.

Not counting the upcoming closings, Winn-Dixie currently operates 527 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
