Marsh Beefs up Meat Nutritional Information

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marsh Supermarkets here has expanded the nutritional information on certain fresh meat products to include the amount of vitamins and/or micronutrients via new labels.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marsh Supermarkets here has expanded the nutritional information on certain fresh meat products to include the amount of vitamins and/or micronutrients via new labels.

The new on-pack nutrition labels are currently found on meat products in 36 Marsh banner stores and 10 LoBill Foods in the Indianapolis area. The additions will be rolled out to all of its stores in August.

"This expanded nutritional information empowers our shoppers to make healthy choices when it comes to purchasing meat products," said Dewayne Wulff, v.p. of meat merchandising. "Many shoppers don't realize that beef and pork are not only a good source of protein, but also include essential vitamins."

The label expansion underway at Marsh is part of a nationwide pilot program sponsored by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association on behalf of the Cattlemen's Beef Board, to increase awareness about the nutrients in beef products by adding nutritional labels that include micronutrients to store-cut and processed meat. Marsh is the third supermarket chain in the nation to participate in the pilot program.

Marsh is also among the few supermarket chains in the state to cut and process all of its meat in the store, rather than at a central processing facility.

Currently, nutritional labels on meat products include the amount of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. The expanded labels at Marsh provide information on the amount of such vitamins and minerals as B, zinc, and iron.

Marsh Supermarkets operates 69 Marsh supermarkets, 38 LoBill Foods stores, eight O'Malia Food Markets, 154 Village Pantry convenience stores, and two Arthur's Fresh Market stores in Indiana, Illinois and western Ohio. The company also operates Crystal Food Services, which provides upscale catering, cafeterias management, office coffee, coffee roasting, vending and concessions, and restaurant management and Primo Banquet Catering and Conference Centers, Floral Fashions, McNamara Florist and Enflora -- Flowers for Business.
