BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. said yesterday that it has been named one of the "Top 40 U.S. Companies for Diversity" by Black Enterprise magazine. The publication also listed the company as one of the "10 Best Companies in Marketing Diversity."
Black Enterprise evaluates diversity programs, consults diversity experts and corporate diversity officers, and surveys 1,000 of America's largest companies and 50 leading global companies with significant U.S. operations. Wal-Mart and the other companies honored were found to have demonstrated significant representation of African-Americans and other ethnic minorities in four key areas: corporate procurement, corporate board participation, senior management representation, and total workforce.
"At Wal-Mart we remain committed to maintaining diversity in all aspects of our business," said Wal-Mart's chief diversity officer, Charlyn Jarrells Porter, in a statement. "We are pleased to be recognized by Black Enterprise magazine for our overall diversity practices and diversity marketing efforts, and will continue to work to be a leader in these areas."
Wal-Mart has been recognized before for its diversity efforts. This is the second honor it has received by Black Enterprise. Others include Top U.S. Companies for Asian-Americans, Asian Enterprise; Noteworthy Companies for Diversity, DiversityInc; and Corporate 100 Best Places to Work for Latinos, Hispanic Magazine.
Wal-Mart employs more than 225,000 African-Americans, 150,000 Hispanics, and 815,000 females. The retailer's 13-member board of directors includes two African-Americans, three females, and two Hispanics.
