WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The American Meat Institute (AMI) here has produced a brochure to help retailers answer frequently asked consumer questions, and also respond to misconceptions about Avian Flu (AI).
Designed to be downloaded and printed by stores, which might be receiving inquiries from consumers, the brochure addresses issues such as: what the U.S. is doing to prevent the high pathogenic H5N1 virus from entering the country; how poultry production in the U.S. differs from production elsewhere; and how ordinary safe handling practices will protect consumers in the extremely unlikely event they ever were exposed to the virus.
"It also outlines why consumers should rest assured that poultry will remain a safe protein choice," said Skip Seward, v.p. of regulatory affairs and AMI's chief microbiologist.
