NORWALK, Conn. -- March 27, 2006--Stew Leonard's here has become a charter sponsor for the "Connecticut 2,000,000 Mile Rideshare Challenge," agreeing to provide free lunch or dinner to thousands of commuters who share rides. By sponsoring 250,000 miles of reduced driving, the famous dairy store is helping to cut down on traffic congestion and air pollution throughout the state.
"Stew Leonard's is committed to the state of Connecticut and to the quality of life we experience here," said v.p. of public relations Meghan Flynn in a statement. "We applaud NuRide for bringing its innovative and dynamic solution to bear on traffic and air pollution in our state."
Connecticut governor Jodi Rell will officially kick off the challenge at a special event on March 30, at the University of Connecticut-Waterbury, with Stew Leonard's on hand as a charter sponsor.
As part of the Connecticut Challenge, state residents and workers will be able to use the NuRide Network to find the right partner with whom to share a single ride for work or pleasure. Participating commuters earn reward points, called "NuRide Miles," which they can redeem for gift cards, gift certificates, and other rewards from corporate sponsors. Stew Leonard's will provide $5 meal vouchers as a reward to thousands of people who work or live in Connecticut and actively take part in the challenge.
The Connecticut Challenge is the second in a series of regional rideshare challenge events that NuRide, which has offices in Herndon, Va. and Essex, Conn., is promoting. The first event, the "Chevron 5,000,000 Mile Rideshare Challenge," launched last month, encompasses the greater Washington, D.C., area.
Family-owned and -operated Stew Leonard's has 2,000 employees and stores in Norwalk, and Danbury, Conn. and Yonkers, NY, with additional stores planned in Newington and Orange, Conn. and East Farmingdale, N.Y.
