ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Associated Wholesale Grocers' formidable Price Chopper banner is hitting town here, in the form of a pair of converted former Food 4 Less stores that will mark the banner's latest units outside its core Kansas City metro market.
AWG has major remodels underway in both stores. The conversions will be corporately owned by the nation's second largest grocery cooperative. The news follows on the heels of last month's addition of four Price Choppers in Topeka, Kan., which are also corporately owned by AWG. Once complete, the St. Joe conversion will bring Price Chopper's store count to 49.
"Price Chopper is just right for St. Joe," said Stan Edde, Price Chopper's g.m. "Many in St. Joe are familiar with the Price Chopper brand, with our highly competitive pricing, and the quality and variety of our fresh produce and meat, and groceries. For those that have shopped Price Chopper in the last couple of years, they've seen the company's industry-leading standards for customer service and store appearance."
With a size that Edde said is "wonderfully convenient -- large enough to have everything, but sized to create a comfortable and enjoyable shopping experience," the two new additions are "state-of-the art stores with butchers in the meat department, full bakeries, and drive-through pharmacies, as well as being open 24-hours a day. You won't find pre-cut and plastic shrink-wrapped meat shipped from out-of-state, or 'fresh' bakery items cooked a day or two earlier and shipped-in. Simply, Price Chopper is the one for St. Joe, the one best choice."
Price Chopper will enter the market with its signature KC Pride Beef, "200 Percent Guarantee, and Triple Inspected Produce programs," Edde said. In addition, the stores will have fresh delis, and on-site bakeries featuring the premium signature lines of bakery goods.
Founded 27 years ago in Kansas City and employing over 8,000 associates, Price Chopper currently has 43 stores in the Metro Kansas City market.
