    Food, Gas Drive Costco's January Comps

    ISSAQUAH, Wash. -- Increased demand for gasoline and food drove total comp sales at warehouse club Costco Wholesale Corp. up to 9 percent for the four weeks ended January 29. During this period, Costco saw net sales of $4.12 billion, an increase of 12 percent from $3.67 billion for the same four-week period last year.

    ISSAQUAH, Wash. -- Increased demand for gasoline and food drove total comp sales at warehouse club Costco Wholesale Corp. up to 9 percent for the four weeks ended January 29. During this period, Costco saw net sales of $4.12 billion, an increase of 12 percent from $3.67 billion for the same four-week period last year.

    For the first twenty-two weeks of its fiscal year ended January 29, the company reported net sales of $24.34 billion, an increase of 11 percent from last year's $21.84.

    Costco operates 471 warehouses, including 346 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 66 in Canada, 17 in the United Kingdom, five in Korea, four in Taiwan, five in Japan and 28 in Mexico. It also operates Costco Online, an electronic commerce Web site. The Company plans to open an additional 20 to 22 new warehouses, including the relocation of two warehouses to larger and better-located facilities, prior to the end of its 53-week 2006 fiscal year ending September 3.
