PARIS -- Global retailer Carrefour SA said yesterday it plans to transfer 1,700 positions from its corporate office here to its stores over the next two years, in a bid to boost competitiveness on its home turf.
The move will affect 20 percent of staff at Carrefour's headquarters and other centralized structures. The world's second-largest retailer after Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said the restructuring would not result in compulsory layoffs.
In other Carrefour news, the retailer said fresh fruits and vegetables ordered from Carrefour's Ooshop.com Web site are being delivered with the Fresh-Check indicator, developed and produced by Morris Plains, N.J.-based Temptime Corp. This marks the first time a food e-tailer is offering the Fresh-Check solution to ensure the freshness of delivered product.
Fresh-Check time-temperature indicators are applied to individual food packages to provide an assurance of freshness through the distribution process and to the time of use, said Temptime. The Fresh-Check technology gives a visual indication of potentially damaging heat exposure throughout the lifespan of products to which they are attached, based upon a gradual, irreversible color change.
