QUINCY, Mass. -- Marc Smith, president of Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. and Giant Food and c.e.o. has presented a ceremonial check for $851,992 to Roger Chapin, founder and chairman of the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting severely wounded and disabled veterans from the War on Terror.

The check presentation ceremony took place last week, Stop & Shop said today.

The funds were raised through the contributions of customers and associates who bought Hero Wristbands at Stop & Shop and Giant Food stores last summer.

"As a nation, we owe a tremendous debt to the brave men and women who have suffered and have become disabled in their service to our nation," noted Smith in a statement. "Through this partnership with the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, we have been able to mobilize the very best instincts of our associates and our customers to provide substantial aid and assistance to hundreds of severely wounded and disabled veterans from the War on Terror."

Many of the funds raised by Stop & Shop and Giant have gone directly to deserving area veterans, among them Army Specialist James Jackson of Concord, N.H., who received more than $19,000 in direct assistance to pay a year's rent, overdue car payments, and utility bills.

Money will also go to help the foundation find quality jobs, build specially adapted homes, and provide financial and emotional support for wounded and disabled veterans.

Ahold-owned Stop & Shop/Giant Food employs over 86,000 associates and operates more than 540 supermarkets throughout the eastern United States.
