QUINCY, Mass. -- Giant Food LLC said yesterday that it raised $1 million from its participation in the 2005 Triple Winner Game. The money raised will be contributed to the Children's Cancer Foundation.
The Triple Winner Game is a scratch card promotion in which every ticket is an instant winner, offering prizes of a free product, gift certificate, or cash prize up to $10,000. Throughout the summer, Giant Food stores sold $1 Triple Winner Game tickets at checkout.
This year was marked Giant Food's first time participating in the Triple Winner promotion. The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., with which Giant Food integrated in 2004, introduced the game in the early 1990s.
Giant/Stop & Shop's c.e.o., Marc Smith said, "In Giant's inaugural year with Triple Winner, they've already set a very high standard. Even though Triple Winner is brand-new to Giant associates and customers, they pulled through as though they've been a part of this program for years."
Shirley Howard, president of the Children's Cancer Foundation, noted, "The funds [Giant] raised will go directly toward Washington- and Baltimore-area cancer research and the building of local cancer facilities for children. Giant has been supportive of the Children's Cancer Foundation for over 20 years and has helped us to raise millions of dollars."
Also participating in the program was the Baltimore Orioles, which promoted the Triple Winner program to its fans.
So far the Triple Winner program has raised over $34 million to fund childhood cancer research and find a cure. Together, Stop & Shop Supermarkets and Giant Food raised $6 million through the 2005 Triple Winner Game.
Stop & Shop/Giant employs more than 83,000 associates and operates 560 stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
