CHICAGO -- Retailers who need to sharpen their skills and further their knowledge might want to check out the IGA Coca-Cola Institute's upcoming fall supermarket operations class, scheduled from Oct. 2-7 at the Hamburger University at McDonald's Campus in Oak Brook, Ill., said the program's organizers. Seven slots are still open in the 40-seat class, which is open to non-IGA retailers.
The one-week program will include classroom instruction from more than 20 faculty members, store tours in the Chicagoland area, and opportunities to learn from IGA retailers globally. New session topics include pest control, and technologies applied to the retail industry.
"Retailers who attend an IGA Coca-Cola Institute Supermarket Operations Class are given the opportunity to study best practices in store departments from leading industry experts," Paulo Goelzer, president of the IGA Coca-Cola Institute, told Progressive Grocer. "In addition, group exercises allow retailers the opportunity to discuss their own industry experiences with peers around the world."
The program has been held every six months for the past two years. During the most recent session of the class, however, 60 percent of participants were from outside the U.S., as impediments such as tuition costs and time away from the job have hampered participation among U.S. grocers. The registration fee for IGA retailers is $1,850, and for non-IGA members is $3,400.
Goelzer said, however, that research about retail industry training has shown that the IGA Coca-Cola Institute's classroom sessions are below the average costs for other classroom sessions, and incorporate a wider variety of training elements while featuring a greater number of speakers.
