KEENE, N.H. -- Distributor C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. here generated $12,000 and more than six tons of food for National Hunger Awareness efforts in its recent third annual company-wide food drive.

Calling attention to the problem of domestic hunger, the theme of the C&S food drive was 'Fighting Hunger. Feeding Hope.'

Thousands of employees contributed nonperishable food, mostly canned goods, which was given to statewide or regional food banks that are part of the America's Second Harvest Network. C&S matched each pound of food with $1 to America’s Second Harvest. The company’s donation totaled $12,000, and was earmarked for public education programs.

"Our associates stepped up again and showed that they're eager to help neighbors in need," said Gina Goff, director of corporate giving at C&S, in a statement. "It's troubling to realize that more than 36 million Americans don't know where their next meal is coming from. Each one of us has the power to do something about it."

In addition to the food drive, C&S participated in events at food banks from coast-to-coast to mark National Hunger Awareness Day on June 7.

C&S Wholesale Grocers was recognized by the Food Marketing Institute with a 2005 Neighborhood Partner of the Year award. The privately owned company provides distribution services to grocery chains and independent stores, delivering to more than 4,000 locations from its distribution centers in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vermont.
