SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Draeger's Supermarkets, Inc. here will close all three of its Bay Area locations on Saturday, July 9, to give employees the opportunity to attend a funeral mass in honor of Draeger, president and c.e.o., who passed away in his sleep on Saturday, July 2, at the age of 86.
According to published reports, family members described Draeger as a simple man who "preferred Hawaiian shirts to suits and ties and the Santa Cruz mountains to exotic vacations." The San Francisco native worked in various family businesses since graduating high school.
Draeger's began as a single, small delicatessen in San Francisco, founded in 1925 by Gustave Draeger. Three generations of the Draeger family have transformed the company into a local resource for the finest national and international foods, wines, gift baskets, cookware, and culinary arts.
