COLTON, Calif. -- In honor of Mother's Day, May 8, Stater Bros., based here, has partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) this month to raise awareness of the large number of women affected by heart disease. Through May 29, all 161 Stater Bros. locations will run the "Taking Steps against Heart Disease and Stroke" campaign to raise money for the AHA. This is the fourth consecutive year the grocer has launched an in-store campaign to benefit the organization.
Stater Bros. customers can participate by buying red paper hearts for $1 each and red wristbands for $5 each. The items, which are scannable at the register, will be added to the customer's total bill, and appear on the receipt for easy recordkeeping. To date, the company's customers and employees have raised more than $630,000 to support research and provide programs to educate surrounding communities about the risks of heart disease and stroke.
In a statement Stater Bros. chairman and c.e.o. Jack H. Brown said: "I am extremely proud of the dedication and hard work of the Stater Bros. 'Family' of Employees and the generosity of our valued customers. . .We are pleased to continue our support of the American Heart Association."
According to the AHA, heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 3 killers in the United States, claiming more than 930,000 American lives annually.
Stater Bros., the largest privately owned supermarket chain in Southern California, with annual sales in 2004 of $3.7 billion, employs over 16,000 associates.
