SCARBOROUGH, Maine. -- Hannaford Bros. has chosen MAP International, a nonprofit organization providing medicines and medical supplies to more than 115 countries, as the recipient of funds collected in the Northeast regional grocer's community donation kiosks during the month of March.

"Hannaford has a long history of being a good corporate citizen," said Caren Epstein, Hannaford's public affairs and community relations manager. "We regularly support community groups and charitable organizations that enrich our communities. By designating our community kiosks to MAP International, our customers can learn about that organization's continued mission of distributing medical supplies to people in need."

The decision to donate March's contributions to MAP International means that Hannaford shoppers are able to learn about the charity at kiosks in the retailer's stores.

"MAP International's mission is to promote better health throughout the world's poorest regions," noted MAP International president Michael Nyenhuis. "Because we rely heavily on individual and corporate donations, we greatly appreciate Hannaford's efforts in spreading the word about our organization and, more importantly, sharing information on how people can improve the lives of individuals in impoverished communities around the globe." MAP, which has almost 100 staffers in its U.S., Kenya, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and Bolivia offices, additionally works in partnership programs with more than 300 organizations, agencies, and medical missions around the world.

With more than 24,000 employees, Hannaford Bros. Co. operates 142 supermarkets and food and drug combination stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts, under the Hannaford Supermarket, Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy, and Victory Super Market banners. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delhaize America, Inc., which in turn is owned by Delhaize Group of Brussels, Belgium.
