    Self-Service Is Good Service For Murk's Village Market

    SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- Murk's Village Market Inc., an eight-store regional independent here, plans to boost its level of customer service by installing self-checkout systems, including a four-lane self-checkout system at its flagship store here in April.

    SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- Murk's Village Market Inc., an eight-store regional independent here, plans to boost its level of customer service by installing self-checkout systems, including a four-lane self-checkout system at its flagship store here in April.

    When completed, the 46,250-sq.-ft. store will employ five traditional checkout lanes in addition to four self-checkout units, plus a shopper courtesy booth and full-service deli. The systems to be installed are Fujitsu U-Scan self-checkout units from StoreNext Retail Technologies LLC, Plano, Texas.

    Murk's will be one of the first independents in southwest Michigan to install self-checkout. "It's critically important that we maintain our leadership position and reputation for outstanding customer service in this market," said Stephen Murk, president and general manager. "Self'checkout gives us the opportunity to leverage our heritage with another technological innovation that gives new service options to our customers."

    Murk's store on highway M140 already uses StoreNext's ISS45 point-of-sale system for store management applications, as well as Fujitsu scanner-scales and TeamPoS 2000 POS terminals with touch screens. Murk's other Village Markets range from three- to 12-lane formats measuring from about 20,000 sq. ft. to 50,000 sq. ft. CRS of Kalamazoo, a StoreNext dealer, has provided sales, service, and support to Murk's for more than 25 years.
