RICHMOND, Va. -- Jacquelin Ldevia Beadles Ukrop, who co-founded the successful Ukrop's Super Markets regional chain here, died Feb. 26 after living with Alzheimer's disease for several years. She was 89.
Jacquelin and her husband, Joe, opened their first grocery store in May 1937. The couple worked side by side at the store, with Jacquelin stocking shelves, handling the office work, and even cooking lunch for the employees.
Mrs. Ukrop continued working as corporate secretary for the company until a few years ago. She was preceded in death by Joe Ukrop, who died in 2002 at the age of 88.
Ukrop is survived by her two sons, James E. Ukrop, chairman of Ukrop's and of First Market Bank; and Robert S. Ukrop, president and c.e.o. of Ukrop's; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, ten nieces, and 14 nephews.
