ARCADIA, Calif -- Customers and employees of Vons raised nearly $1.1 million for breast cancer research, awareness and treatment. The record-setting effort capped a month-long fundraising campaign designed to focus attention and to raise money to fight the debilitating disease.
Funds were raised in numerous ways. From hot dog and root beer float sales, to jails and karaoke nights, Vons employees got creative -- and the creativity paid off. Proceeds will be distributed to local breast cancer organizations, selected by the store employees from each district, as well as the City of Hope and national Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Vons is a division of Safeway Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America based on annualized sales of approximately $33 billion.
