BOISE, Idaho - Albertson's, Inc. said yesterday it has set a goal of raising a record $1 million in cash and product donations this holiday season for donation to more than 75 food banks across the country. The retailer kicked off its month-long hunger relief campaign with a $100,000 donation to local food banks nationwide that are affiliated with America's Second Harvest.
America's Second Harvest, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States, estimates that Albertsons’ cash contributions alone will provide as many as 1.5 million meals for hungry U.S. residents. For every dollar donated, the organization says it can provide 15 meals.
"Hunger is a harsh reality that millions of Americans face each year, including more than 12 million children -- which is especially troubling this holiday season," said Albertsons chairman, c.e.o., and president Larry Johnston in a statement. "Albertsons is acutely aware of the growing number of people who seek help from our nation's food banks. We are committed to providing support to hunger-relief organizations through food and cash donations, as well as being actively involved in hunger-awareness campaigns in the communities where we live and work."
This month, Albertsons’ banners (Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Acme, Albertsons-Osco, Albertsons-Sav-on, Shaw's, and Star Market) will launch food drives and related charitable activities in more than 1,800 stores in 32 states. The efforts are expected to benefit more than 75 food banks nationwide.
In September, Albertsons became the first U.S. retailer to launch a "fresh rescue" program providing local food banks with dairy and meat product donations that have a limited shelf life, but are necessary components of a healthy diet. For the past two years America's Second Harvest has named Albertsons the "National Retailer of the Year," in recognition of the grocer's efforts in hunger relief. In 2003 the company contributed more than 23 million pounds of food.
