SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway, Inc. erred on the side of caution this week, as it recalled ground beef sold at a Sacramento, Calif. unit after discovering a loose piece of metal in its hamburger grinder.
The 671 pounds of recalled fresh ground beef had been sold at a store at Elk Grove and Florin Roads on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The recalled meat included all types and weights of ground beef, and would have sell-by dates marked Oct. 26 and Oct. 27.
A Safeway spokeswoman told Progressive Grocer that the piece of metal was discovered during a routine inspection of the store's hamburger grinder. She added that no customers have reported problems.
Safeway said it would offer replacements or refunds to consumers who’d purchased the beef.
