SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Albertsons, Inc. is adding 60 Salt Lake City-area ZIP codes to its online delivery territory this week, the company said yesterday. With this expansion, Albertsons' e-commerce operation now serves 11 major metropolitan areas across the U.S. -- which the company claims is the largest geographic reach of any online grocery provider.
"Albertsons.com will provide shoppers with flexibility to complement their busy lifestyles," said Frank Yaksitch, Utah area v.p. "With a 90-minute delivery window or the alternative of picking up pre-ordered groceries at the store of their choice, our dot-com service is a continuation of our promise to make our customers' lives easier."
Shoppers may go to the Albertsons.com Web site, register, and place their order either for delivery or in-store pick-up. Online orders placed by 10 a.m. will be available for pick-up after 5 p.m. the same day; orders placed by midnight will be available for delivery the following day. A fee of $9.95 is charged for door-to-door delivery and $4.95 for pick-up service.
Albertsons uses its brick-and-mortar store infrastructure to support the online service, providing a full selection of grocery, dry goods, and pharmacy items via its Save-on.com service. "E-shoppers" are trained to select the freshest produce, meat, bakery items, dairy products, and flowers available. All products ordered through Albertsons.com are available at the same prices available in the chain's Salt Lake area stores, according to the company.
Shoppers can choose to have groceries delivered to their home or office within a prescheduled 90-minute window, or pick up their pre-paid, pre-packed groceries at a convenient store. A total of 33 neighborhood stores in the Salt Lake City area will offer the pick-up service, providing shoppers additional flexibility.
To kick off the program, Albertsons will feature an e-coupon promotion for the first four weeks of service.
Albertsons.com currently offers its online ordering and delivery service in Boise, Seattle, San Diego, Southern California, Portland, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Philadelphia, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Web site is now accepting orders in Salt Lake City, and deliveries will begin Wednesday.
