LANHAM, Md.- Safeway and Genuardi's customers throughout the mid-Atlantic region will now be able to cash their government or payroll checks in Eastern Division stores. By adding the new convenience, Safeway immediately becomes the largest check-cashing service provider in Maryland, with all 76 of its stores offering this amenity.
Customers presenting specific types of government checks (such as benefit payments and payroll checks) will be able to cash their checks at the customer service counter for a fee of $2 for every $200, up to a total of $1,499. Most check cashing companies charge between 5 percent and 10 percent of the check's face value for the service.
At present, a total of 120 Safeway stores (Maryland and Virginia) and 33 Genuardi's Markets in Pennsylvania are equipped to handle these transactions. The company's remaining Safeway stores in Washington, D.C. (excluding the Townhouse facility) and Delaware, along with its several Genuardi's outlets in the state, will add the service later this year.
These check transactions will involve a two-stage authorization process, with the first stage conducted by Alpharetta, Ga.-based Certegy Systems and the second by Safeway. Typewritten or handwritten checks, as well as tax refund checks, will not be accepted.
