BRUSSELS -- Belgian retailer Delhaize Group said Tuesday it is expanding its convenience store concept Delhaize City to Germany, Greece, Romania, and the Czech Republic.
With a floor space of about 500 square meters, the Delhaize City shops are located in city centers and concentrate on selling fresh foods and ready-made meals. Delhaize says there has been a shift in the retail market to smaller city-center shops and affiliated stores.
The first Delhaize City store outside of Belgium will open in October in the German town of Aix-la-Chapelle. It will be followed by store openings in Athens, Bucharest, and Prague by the end of the year. Delhaize already operates larger supermarket chains in Greece, Romania, and the Czech Republic, and has opened one supermarket in Aix-la-Chapelle.
Delhaize currently operates 10 city shops in Belgium and plans to increase the number to 14.
