Boise, Idaho -- Albertsons, Inc., announced today the expansion of its online grocery service, Albertsons.com, to Boise area residents. The Web site is now accepting orders, and deliveries will begin today to 13 Boise area ZIP codes. With this expansion, Albertsons.com now serves eight major metropolitan areas in the western states (the largest geographic reach of any online grocery provider.)
"Albertsons.com will provide shoppers with flexibility to complement their busy lifestyles," explained Larry Johnston, chairman and c.e.o. "With a 90-minute delivery window or the alternative of picking up preordered groceries at the store of their choice, our dot-com service is a continuation of our promise to make our customers' lives easier."
Shoppers may go to the Albertsons.com Web site, register, and place their orders for either delivery or in-store pickup. Online orders placed by 10 a.m. will be available for pickup after 5 p.m. the same day; orders placed by midnight will be delivered or available for pickup the following day. A nominal fee of $9.95 is charged for door-to-door delivery, or $4.95 for pickup service.
Albertsons uses its existing brick-and-mortar store infrastructure to support the online service, providing a full selection of grocery, pharmacy and dry-good items. A total of 15 neighborhood stores in the Boise area will offer the pickup service. Albertsons is the only online retail grocery shopping service offering a pickup option.
Albertsons is using a measured, strategic approach to expanding its online service. The company created its own Web site and tied the Internet service to existing pricing and inventory systems. All products ordered through Albertsons.com are available at the same competitive prices available in Boise-area stores.
Albertsons.com was originally launched in Seattle in November 1999. The company expanded its online service to 146 ZIP codes in San Diego County in October 2001 and added approximately 400 ZIP codes in Southern California in February 2002. In March 2002, the service was expanded to 53 ZIP codes in the greater Portland/Vancouver area and over 100 in the San Francisco Bay area. Eighty-four ZIP codes in Las Vegas were added to the service in November 2002.
